The best prevention is risk factor modification. If you have high cholesterol, you have to lower it. Avoid getting diabetes, but if you do have it, get it under control. If you have high blood pressure, watch your salt intake and make sure you get good nutrition to lower your blood pressure. Eat more greens to get more nitric oxide in your system. When you increase nitric oxide, your blood pressure will come down. Exercise is extremely important.
